How to Prevent Distracted Driving

Studies have shown that most accidents are caused by human error, a preventable mistake that results in property damage, injury, or worse. While it is impossible to prevent all accidents, it is fairly simple to cut down on one of the primary causes, distracted driving. Preventing distracted driving can save lives if everyone can follow some simple rules when behind the wheel of their vehicle.

5 Ways to Prevent Distracted Driving in the Tampa Bay Area

Here are some tips on reducing your chances of becoming distracted when behind the wheel of your vehicle. While you may not prevent all accidents from occurring, you can certainly cut down on the chances of them happening.

1. Get Ready Before You Start the Vehicle

This means stowing away anything inside your vehicle that can become a distraction. Any loose gear or possessions that might roll around in your car should be picked up before you start. This also means that if you need to be prepared for the day, comb, shave, and brush your teeth before you get going.

Next, turn on the radio and set it to the station you want, adjust the seats and mirrors, and set the GPS before you shift into drive. You’ll want as many things out of the way as possible before you get going. Remember, you don’t have to be paranoid about it, but the fewer distractions inside the vehicle, the easier it will be to keep your mind on the road.

2. Minimize Cell Phone Usage | Don’t Text and Drive

Arguably the biggest distraction of all is the cell phone which causes accidents on a daily basis. Ideally, it would be best to shut off your cell phone so that it will not distract you. However, you can keep it on if you do not use it. This applies to hands-free cell phones, which have also proven to cause accidents through distractions. Only use your cell phone in case of an emergency and when you are stopped.

3. Scan the Road

Your focus should be on driving the vehicle, so you should keep your attention on the road by scanning in the front and using your mirrors to check the sides and behind your vehicle. You’ll want to keep your eyes in front most of the time, but when in traffic you should check around for other vehicles and pedestrians.

4. Secure Children

If your child needs attention, pull over and provide all that you can. To try and reach into the backseat while driving is a recipe for disaster, so if something is happening inside the vehicle that needs your attention, pull over and provide it so that you will not be distracted on the road.

5. Have Passengers Help You Drive

Asking someone to keep an eye on their side of the road or help with any children you have in the backseat can keep your attention on the road where it belongs. This is an excellent means of preventing distracted driving.

All in all, you can do a lot to reduce distractions while driving, which may help you avoid accidents.
